I have a super awesome treat for you guys today! Elizabeth (from My Glad Heart) and I were paired up as guest post/swappers for today, and I specifically asked her if she could do a post about what life is like on a Farm with her twins! I’ve always been fascinated by what life would be like if I had a huge garden, goats and other livestock, and can’t wait to see what she has for us. Without further ado, here she is!
Hey guys! I’m excited to be talking with you today! Kelly and I were paired up to do a blog swap. I was excited I was paired up with her, because I recently found her blog and I have loved reading it. I especially liked her Mommy Guilt post. This is something that I have been struggling with lately! Anyway, Kelly wanted me to share my pro’s and con’s of living on a farm. I didn’t grow up on a farm, so all of this is relatively new to me. My husband however, grew up on this farm and in the same house that we live in right now. This is my little family. My husband Jay, and my 14 month olds Grace and Leo. And without further ado, here is my list of Pro’s and Con’s of farm living.
Pro’s
-Jay works with his dad and his uncle, so at least for right now if he needs time off, he can take it pretty easily.
-During the slow times, such as winter and rainy days, Jay is around more. I love it and the kids love it.
-We have a big yard with lots of room for the kids to run and play.
-Privacy. I can walk around naked if I wanted to and I don’t have to worry about people seeing me. I can do this, but I choose not to. Because that’s just weird.
– Room for a big garden. Although, the last time I had a garden, my MIL planted it, weeded it, and probably helped harvest it. I was pregnant with the twins and super sick, so I don’t feel super bad about it.
-The kids will get the chance to work with their dad and grandpa. Which is so special. They will get to experience what work is and that it can be fun.
-Farmers are usually handy, so my husband does all my house project biddings. He secretly enjoys it.
-We can have all sorts of animals. We have had ducks, a raccoon, chickens, dogs, and cats. We are thinking about getting a goat.
Con’s
-Planting, Irrigation, and Harvest are the busy times on the farm. And by busy, I mean busy. Especially during harvest. Harvest is the worst. I feel like a single mother for a couple of months. And let me tell you, it’s hard.
-Early mornings and late nights. And odd hours.
-Since we live in the country, there aren’t quick trips anywhere.
-Going anywhere, including going on dates, often includes running farm errands.
-The days off that Jay has are usually rainy or snowy, so it’s not like we can go do super fun stuff.
-Since we live on the home farm, we get a lot of semi, combine, and tractor traffic. It’s really no big deal, except during naptime. The sound often wakes the kids up.
-Our yearly income can change a lot from year to year because of the markets. We never really know what we’re going to get.
-Our livelihood depends on the weather. Which can get pretty scary, especially during draught years and hail storms.
