Barely Making it to Monday
I know I only just posted last night, but there were so many fair pictures I thought they deserved their own post. I have had the CRAZIEST last two weekends! When organizing my schedule for this fall semester, I knew that, unlike most people, my busiest time would be the weekends and my BREAK would be Mon-Wed. This is due to my Thursday night Johnson grad class, teaching all day Friday at St. Peter’s, Saturday morning Shakespeare class, Saturday voice lesson and choir practice/Vespers, and Sunday morning choir practice/liturgy. Add onto to that special events, and whew!! It was all I could do to keep my energy up and make it to Monday! Now how’s that for a reversal!
Last weekend, for instance, I helped organize a choir workshop for our church. Jammieca Mott, my voice teacher, was the instructor for the entire 6 hour workshop. A few of us had to sing solos so that she could critique us in front of the entire group. I went first, because I figured, hey, she picks on me every week in our lesson! Nothing new!
Wrong. Very wrong. Seeing as up until a year ago I had never done singing of any sort, this was the first time I’d sung in front of anyone by myself. There was that one time I tried out for a musical in the 6th grade and practically threw up on stage.
So, “A” for bravery. As for talent, well, good thing Christine was the only one other than the choir who had to hear me (she came up from Houston to join us for the weekend!). It was tiring- we went from a 6 hour workshop straight into singing a 3 hour Vespers service!
This weekend was crazy busy as well. I had a giant test in my Shakespeare class on Saturday morning. We had to memorize at least 30 formal element terms (things like, “polyptoton”, “synechoche” and “catachresis”) and read Puttenham’s Art of Poesy in preparation. All we were given for the quiz was a Spenserian sonnet. The instructions were to write an essay demonstrating our knowledge of the “formal elements” while arguing for the meaning and intent of the poem. I managed to crank out 3 pages in the 45 minutes we were given, but I was nervous!
After going straight to my voice lesson and then church for 3 hours, Courtney drove me over the Gaspards for “Girls Night”. This is something we just started doing, with out first event being the outing to PF Chang’s and Time Traveler’s Wife. This time, all 10 of us got together at Katie’s GIANT, BEAUTIFUL house in Dallas. We ate brisket tacos and nachos before “retiring” to the sitting room for different varieties of wine and goodies. TONS of goodies. We had chai caramel fondue with pound cake, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate with cherry at the center, pears, apples and Milano cookies. So much yum!
And then, of course, Jenny, Jason, Jesse and I went to the Fair after church on Sunday. All in all, I am just thankful I made it to Monday!
Here are a few pictures from the Girls’ Gathering.
Texas State Fair!
Today Jesse and I went on a double date with Jenny and Jason to the Texas State Fair. It claims to be the biggest fair in the US. I think it was just most the crowded, especially when it started pouring rain and the only place to find shelter was the food court (which was not meant to hold EVERYONE AT THE SAME TIME!!!). After the rain, however, enough people left to where it was fun to walk around. Avoiding puddles is much more enjoyable than getting pushed around!
There is thing that I feel I should mention. The health nut in me died a grotesque and agonizing death today. This wasn’t just your typical, run of the mill Fair Junk Food. This was the Mother Ship of everything bad for you. In fact, I’m fairly certain you could arrive at the fair in 100% health and leave in an ambulance with a heart clogged with fat embolisms.
For example:
They sell deep-fried Snickers:
And deep-fried cookie dough:
And EVEN (get ready for it…) deep fried butter!
We also saw other deep-fried things: funnel cakes (yum!), jalapeño cheese corndogs, Nutter Butters, Oreos, cheesesticks, french fries (which means they’ve been deep-fried TWICE) and even soda. Yeah, I know. How on earth do you deep fry SODA?
Here are a few more pictures for you:
THE MOST Stunning Bride EVER!
You might remember that a few months ago I attended and played piano for my cousin Heidi’s wedding in CA. I finally saw her wedding photos on Facebook, and let me tell you, she is, in my opinion, the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen! I mean, on a typical day, Heidi’s already gorgeous- she has that perfect Dark Beauty quality that so many girls dream about. Catch her on her wedding day, however, after she’d been waiting to marry Kyle for 4 years, and she’s radiant.
If you don’t believe me, take a look for yourself!
