Harmony Headlands

Harmony Headlands Hike

One of my favorite activities that we did on our 3 week vacation in CA was to hike along the CA coast, about 30 minutes from my parents’ house. This trail is called the Harmony Headlands Park, and it is one of our family’s favorite hiking spots.

CA got a lot of rain in the past month or so (bringing the drought level from “worst in recorded history to just “bad”), so it was nice and green on the hike. It was also around 60 degrees and sunny– not too cold for December 31st! What a great way to end the year.

Our Yellow and Gray Kitchen

December 22, 2014 2 Comments

White and Gray and Turquoise Kitchen

The kitchen in this town home has been the most challenging part of living in our temporary rental situation, but it’s come a long way so I thought I’d share pictures anyways 🙂 When we moved in, most of the appliances didn’t work and a refrigerator wasn’t provided. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise because I was able to buy the refrigerator of my dreams– a GE retro inspired bottom freezer one. I found it new and still under warranty on craigslist for a few hundred less than what it costs at Home Depot!

There was no kitchen additions such as hoods and microwave, so we added that. The tile has rust stains, so we added rugs. None of the cupboard doors hang straight or close all the way (see exhibit A underneath the sink), so we removed the ones above the dishwasher since I was constantly banging my head on it (doors that won’t stay all the way open OR shut kind of drive me crazy!) and added contact paper. Since we have only a few counters, we also added about $20 worth of Ikea stuff to the walls to make more space. We efficiently handle problems with your main sewer line.

We added the fruit basket to make counter space as well. Up on top, you can see a narrow strip of dark brown. Can you believe that the kitchen used to be covered in this color???? I missed this little spot, and haven’t gotten around to painting it. It serves as a thankful reminder for how much nicer things look now.Hanging Fruit Basket

Remember how I said that we moved the dining table out of the “actual” dining room and into the kitchen nook? This area used to be my office, but it was too hard to get things done here while the boys were running around. I thought I would be able to work while the boys played in the sunroom just beyond, but the windows are such poor quality that they barely blocked any of the noise. My office is now in a corner of our master bedroom, which is already working a lot better.

I also mentioned that I love all the natural light we get right here.  I turned off the lights for this picture, and it is still very bright. Ignore the ugly yellow cord at the bottom– one of the outlets doesn’t work, so in order to keep our fish tank there we have to run a cord from somewhere else (sigh, not even one of the biggest problems we’ve had).

Gray and Yellow Dining Room

And here’s the other side of the kitchen. I really don’t like galley kitchens because it’s hard for more than two people to be cooking at the same time in what feels like a hallway with appliances (we had the same problem with our kitchen in CA). But my mom and I did manage to make our entire Thanksgiving meal here, so it’s quite functional!

My beautiful fridge! My one luxury 🙂 And a bonus lego to the left, what a treat!

Retro Refrigerator

To the left of our fridge is a pantry, and to the left of that is the other side of the kitchen nook. I set this up as my command station when my office was here, but left most of it even when I moved my desk. It’s much easier to grab papers and file mail when it’s near the back door. The dry erase calendar and meal plan chart are hung on a large sheet of metal from Home Depot.Kitchen Wall Calendar

And, once again, across from this is our dining table (it has two large leafs that can extend it, which enabled us to host my entire family for Thanksgiving).

Right outside the kitchen nook is our sunroom.

Looking out the kitchen

Since the weather turned frigid, I moved all of my plants in here onto a $20 sofa table.

On the other side of the sunroom is the boys’ playspace. After one nasty fall from this contraption (that made my heart stop!), we shelled out $40 for super thick mats. I love that we’ve been able to keep this space mostly clear, since we’ve been able to host friends and their kids and have a large place for them to set up a tent, throw balls, and run around like crazy, despite the fact that our entire place is only around 1200 square feet.

On the left, you can barely see the four or five storage containers we have for school binders, books, and holiday decorations. One of the upsides to not having a garage or storage unit? We have NOWHERE to store junk, which means we had to get rid of it. Sad? No.

Out the door to the right is a little bit of yard and our gated carport.

Long sunroom

Don’t hate, but I got this BRAND NEW sand table for $5 at a garage sale 🙂 It’s pretty dirty now though! I love that this keeps them entertained for hours at a time– I super dislike the fact that sand gets everywhere. But we have a rug before going into the kitchen, so that stops the majority of it from getting tracked into the house.

So, there you have it! Our yellow and gray kitchen, along with our sunroom/playroom. It isn’t my favorite, but it’s good enough for now 🙂

Our Townhouse Living Room

December 18, 2014 4 Comments

Alright, we’ve been moved in for around 4.5 months and I still haven’t posted any pictures of our Dallas townhouse (we are renting until our CA house sells), which is some sort of new record for me. Basically, as I’ve mentioned previously, we’ve been having problem after problem getting our landlord to fix things. No hot water four separate times, mold in different places, broken appliances for which we turned to take help on an online repair shop which guaranteed us same day help and they delivered. We completely had forgottent that we’d a warranty from a few Arizona home warranty companies. We’ve obtained legal counsel and have made sure that we’ve gone through the proper channels to get things done, but we’re still in the “wait and see” time frame. In such instances it is important to consider contacting Water Mold Fire Restoration.

But that didn’t stop me from decorating, naturally. In fact, getting things livable became even more important, the more problems we had. Since I am a stay at home mom, having my house set up and in order means everything, since I spend 90% of my waking hours here.

One of the first things I did was paint over all the dark reddish brown that someone had put on the walls. Since it is a single story town home, we have neighbors on either side of us, making it feel like a long dark hallway since there are no windows on either side (just front and back). I really wanted to keep all the colors light, and we added a lot of lamps. We’ve moved almost every single piece of furniture at least 3 times– in fact, about 3 weeks ago, we moved my office out of the kitchen nook and into our bedroom (it was too noisy to work there anyways!), the dining room table into the kitchen nook, and left the dining area open for the boys to play. I once read that a trusted custom cabinet maker suggests that if we had to keep the kitchen nice and tidy, we had to splash the wall with whites and install some cabinets, which we later did. We also replaced one of our couches and rearranged everything!

Here is what you see as you enter the doorway:

The area where the tree is stationed is where our dining room used to be, but I didn’t like having the table in the same room as the couches. There’s also more natural morning light in the kitchen, and it’s nice to eat there. We just moved our Expedit bench into this area (it had been in the sunroom), along with the boys’ art table and coloring books. Like I said, we’re keeping this area wide open so that the boys have yet another area to run around and play in (they also have their playroom and the sunroom, but they’re kids and need lots of space to play, since we don’t have a backyard any longer). We are able to store LOTS of stuff in that Expedit bench, including extra kids books and toys, scarves, mittens and umbrellas. Our coat closet is right behind it, so this is the perfect “get ready” station before we head out back to the carport.Seating area near Christmas Tree

Craft Table Living Room

As you look back from the dining area to the front door, you can see our living room. When we first moved in August, we had this light green couch and a small brown leather Chesterfield sofa. As time wore on, I realized that the two sofas were not making efficient use of the long and narrow layout, so we got a large leather sectional off of Craigslist and sold the brown one (I actually MADE money on the transaction!).Living Room looking back at door

Our Ikea hack coffee table is on wheels, so it’s very easy to roll out of the way when we want more open space. It is a bit of a hazard for a few of my friends who have 9 month old babies, however! Whenever they come over, the babies try to pull up on it and end up face planting when the wheels move!

Rustic entryway Christmas

So, there you have it– our townhouse living room. It’s hard to beat $1200/month in rent, especially because it’s less than half a mile from Jesse’s work, and only until we sell our CA house. I have found a good option to sell a house fast (check out this website).

What I Wore– Date At the Mall

November 18, 2014 3 Comments

Winter Outfit

Last week, Jesse and I went on a real-life, no-kids date at the mall. This was our first date since our anniversary at the end of August, and it was VERY refreshing! We went to the Galleria mall near us, watched ice skaters dance around the giant 4-story tall Christmas tree, ate bacon burgers, got milkshakes, and even saw a weird fashion show with real people posing as statues (bizarre).Mall outfit shoes

In case you can’t tell from the outfit, it’s gotten SUPER COLD here in Dallas. The past week, we haven’t broke 40 degrees, and hovered mainly around 28, even in the middle of the day! Last night, we had SNOW! To get the cute hats visit Cap Wholesalers

Here’s to hoping we get a few more kid-free dates in the near future!
