Last night was the young adult gathering for St. Seraphim’s. This week, it was Karen’s turn to host.
The event began at 6:30pm, so Jesse and I went to the Unruhs after church for a few hours, and then home to nap.
When we woke up, it was 7:45, which for those of you who are like me and need TIME to do Math, is an hour and fifteen minutes after 6:30. Which means that we were already an hour and fifteen minutes late.
And we hadn’t fed the dogs we were hired to house-sit.
And Karen lives 1/2 hr. away.
So we got there around 9:30, by which time only half of the group was left. Luckily, we were right in time for a competitive round of Taboo, boys (Jason, Jesse, Fr. John) vs. girls (Courtney, Jenny, Karen and Me). After another hour of battling it out, the girls won by a landslide. I hope everyone enjoyed it. I was too busy keeping my competitive nature in check to notice.
Once it was over, everyone except for Courtney and Fr. John left. A little while later, Jason gave Jesse a ride home in his car.
So what did the three of us girls do? We talked for a couple hours, during which time I noticed that Karen had “High School Musical” sitting on her TV. I began to mock her, to which she responded silly things like, No! You don’t understand! It’s actually really awesome! You’ll totally get into it!
To which Jenny responded, “Karen, this is totally why I thought we could never be friends.”
I have to admit, I’ve always been a bit intrigued by this pop-culture phenomenon, ever since a poster on one of my student’s bedroom walls. On top of that, over the years I’ve had more students than I can count ask to play songs from one of the three movies (to which I’ve always replied, “Oh, I’m sorry. I’m fresh out of stupid.”)
So I agreed to watch a little bit. A little bit turned into the whole movie, complete with peanut butter, bagels, and Karen’s beautiful voice singing along.
After a minor bit of reflection, I’ve decided that I will not be renting any of the other videos, EVER. But it wasn’t as terrible as I’d imagined. And what could be better than staying up until 3am with two of your close friends, laughing and eating peanut butter?
As Karen says, “Peanut Butter really does go with everything!”
Even Zac Efron.
Don’t think about that.
